I may not know sports, but I do know Herschel Walker was a running back. Now let’s do whatever we can to make sure Walker runs back to his life as a washed up former football player instead of to Washington D.C. Votes are still being counted in many midterms races, and even though control of the House still up in the air, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy is already in a contested battle over the House Speaker role. Plus, Tropical Storm Nicole might ruin Tiffany Trump’s wedding while Biden heads to Egypt to talk climate change.

The Georgia Senate election is officially moving on to a runoff between a pastor/qualified US senator, and a former football player whose understanding of climate change is, “Our good air decide to float over to China, bad air. So when China gets our good air, their bad air got to move. So it moves over to our good air space. And now we’ve got to clean that back up.” It's important we all relive that moment. Sen. Raphael Warnock and Herschel Walker will face off in a runoff election on December 6 since neither candidate got more than 50 percent of the vote this week. Warnock leads slightly with 49.4 percent of the vote, while Walker is netting 48.5 percent and Libertarian Chase Oliver scraping up 2.1 percent. Just a reminder that Walker has faced allegations of domestic violence from multiple women, has paid for previous’ partners abortions even though he advocates for anti-abortion policies, and thinks that getting an honoroary sheriff’s badge makes him an actual law enforcement officer.

As of midday Thursday, winners still haven’t been declared in either Nevada or Arizona. Incumbent Democratic Senators Mark Kelly and Catherine Cortez Masto are looking better every day in Arizona and Nevada, respectively, as votes continue to roll in from large Dem-leaning counties. Read more.

Election results may take days to finalize, but forecasters think Republicans will eke out a narrow majority in the House. Regardless, all is not calm in the Grand Ole Party. House Minority Leader, Kevin McCarthy (R-CA-CLOWN) was poised for the coveted House Speaker role, but party in-fighting might make that dream impossible. A few Republican members of Congress have suggested they don’t have any interest in a McCarthy speakership, with their appetite further suppressed by a poorer-than-expected showing in the midterms. McCarthy will also have to gain the support of the House Freedom Caucus. Kevin is learning a lesson that women and people of color are very familiar with: it doesn’t matter how qualified you are for a job or how much you feel like you’re a shoe-in: A bunch of white dudes can still fuck everything up. With the midterms safely behind him, the Commander in Chief can get back to other things, like trying to make sure the world doesn’t end. President Biden is headed to Egypt this week to give a speech at the United Nations COP27 Climate Summit, where he is expected to tout his major climate legislation, and announce the U.S.’s renewed commitment to fighting climate change. Other countries might not welcome him with open arms, as much of the discussion at the summit has focused on criticizing the U.S. and other industrialized countries for causing the problem in the first place and demanding reparations. Several European leaders have already pledged money to help poor nations recover from loss and damage caused by a changing climate, but some are calling for the U.S. to join them. France’s President Emmanuel Macron said, “Pressure must be put on rich non-European countries, telling them ‘You have to pay your fair share.’” You want America to help pay to fix a problem we created? LOL. Read more.

Thanks to climate change, hurricane “season” is no longer really a thing, which is why Florida is dealing with a major storm only two weeks before Thanksgiving. Hurricane Nicole made landfall in Florida’s east coast, caused major rain, and left over 300,000 Floridians without power. Nicole has since been downgraded to a Tropical Storm. Much of Florida is still recovering from Hurricane Ian which hit the state six weeks ago. Tiffany Trump is set to get married this weekend at Mar-a-Lago and according to tabloids is “flipping out” about the storm possibly getting in the way of her big day. A storm on your wedding day is not great, but it’s not like Nicole showed up wearing white. Read more.

Afghanistan: The Taliban are banning women from parks and gyms in Afghanistan in their latest effort to take away women’s rights in the country. The Taliban took power last year and have since banned girls from middle school and high school, restricted women from most fields of employment, and ordered them to wear head-to-toe clothing in public. A spokesman from the Ministry of Virtue and Vice said the latest ban was being introduced because women were ignoring gender segregation orders and not wearing the required hijab, or head covering. Oh, you thought you were done with elections? Hah! As if. The December 6th Georgia runoff will be here before you know it, and there’s a lot you can do to make sure Raphael Warnock wins. First of all, you can donate to the Warnock campaign. If going to Georgia to canvass in the next month is off the table for you, you can write letters to Georgia voters. Vote Forward is a nonprofit whose mission is to “empower grassroots volunteers to encourage their fellow citizens in underrepresented communities to vote. We build tools to facilitate communications between Americans to help strengthen our democracy.” They’re getting ready to start sending letters to Georgians to get out the vote, so sign up for their mailing list to get more information for how to do that, and in the meantime donate to their letter kit program.
